Did I ever tell you about that one time I did some voice over for some guys making a VR game and then they asked me to come join their cyberpunk commune in New York?

No?

Well buckle up baby duck because it's a bout to get weird.

I'm currently wrapping the script for my next video and it's all about cyberpunk, bubblegum dystopias, and whether or not I'm packing my bags for the big apple.

Here's a little excerpt:

I’ve been obsessed with vaporwave synth and neon for the past couple years, especially anything with glowing pink and purple, it’s just so pretty. And I get how that sounds. Why would anyone want to live in a world like this? Why would anyone be drawn to a dystopian world with societal collapse and decay? Why would someone want to trade their current life for a post-industrial wasteland?

Well - a lot of people see American life as pretty dystopian already.

While many things have gotten better, a lot of things have gotten worse, and other things are eroding. Unless you’re extremely lucky, there’s a very good chance you’re stressed out about affording or even getting healthcare, there’s a good chance your wages haven’t kept with inflation so simply surviving is expensive, and there’s little to no money for entertainment.

And it seems impossible to change the way things are because everything is happening on such a massive scale with so much oppressive technology.

In a lot of the movies and shows set in the cyberpunk genre, there’s this idea that even though everything is dystopian, there’s some kind of accessible relief to be found whether that’s through virtual reality, fashion, neon lights and holographic billboards, and body modification.

When you take into consideration how many people in the current American population live in industrial urban sprawl without third spaces, a cyberpunk dystopia seems preferable.

What we’re experiencing in real time has actually been called a bubblegum dystopia.

Keep an eye out for more updates and sneak peeks next week!
